This article revisits the context of the writing of the book Women in Class Society (1969), by Heleieth Saffioti, considered the pioneering study on women, gender and feminism in Brazil. First, it shows how the influx of women into São Paulo’s universities, as well as their actions, were decisive factors in the development of the first works in this area. Second, it reviews the intellectual environment of the author and her work, highlighting the similarities and differences in relation to earlier works from a thematic perspective, as well as with regard to gender relations in the academic setting of the social sciences.||O artigo se propõe a revisitar o contexto de produção do livro A mulher na sociedade de classes (1969), de Heleieth Saffioti, considerado pioneiro dos estudos sobre mulheres, gênero e feminismo no Brasil. Em um primeiro momento, procura-se apresentar como o ingresso e a atuação de mulheres na universidade paulista foi um fator decisivo para o desenvolvimento dos primeiros trabalhos nessa área. Em um segundo momento, busca-se evidenciar a ambiência intelectual da autora e de sua obra, assinalando as similitudes e diferenças em relação aos trabalhos anteriores, tanto do ponto de vista temático, quanto das relações de gênero no espaço acadêmico das Ciências Sociais.
