This paper discusses the relationship between Euripides’ Trojan Women, from 415 B. C., and the history of Athens, specifically its victory in Melos, in the Peloponnesian War. In order to do so, we examine Euripides’ play as well as other ancient sources. We assume that, because the tragedy has a deeply historical character, an interpretation that does not seek to understand this character will misunderstand the text. Resigning the heroes, the crimes and the excesses of war, the poet gives to the people more than a broken mirror, which reflects what had happened in Melos. He gives also a prophetic image of the catastrophe that will be the Sicilian Expedition.||O presente artigo busca discutir a relação entre Troianas de Eurípides, de 415 a. C. e a história de Atenas, especificamente sua vitória em Melos na Guerra do Peloponeso. Para tanto, faz-se um estudo da peça de Eurípides, bem como o uso de outras fontes antigas diversas, partindo-se do pressuposto que, porque a tragédia tem um caráter profundamente histórico, uma interpretação que não busque entender esse caráter pouco entenderá do texto. Ressignificando os heróis, os crimes e os excessos da guerra, o poeta dá ao povo, para além de um espelho trincado a refletir o que ocorrera em Melos, a imagem profética da catástrofe que será a Expedição da Sicília.
