The article analyzes one of the most dramatic episodes of the beginning of Brazil's republican history : the Contestado region's great millenarian eruption, in which the very paradigm of the Republic had the effect of catalyzing the period's political attentions. Emphasis is placed on one aspect of this episode: the role which land plays in the millenarian cosmology of Brazil's southern sertões. Resourcefully basing their work on funeral rites, the authors unveil another face of the sertaneja "monarchy", in which land is not just the locus of the material reproduction of existence. From this perspective, the exotic and the monstrous are transformed and "religious fanaticism" discloses the logic of its rationale.||Esse artigo analisa um dos episódios mais dramáticos do início da história republicana brasileira: o grande movimento milenarista do Contestado, no qual o paradigma da República acabou por catalisar as atenções políticas da época. Aqui a ênfase recai sobre um dos aspectos do episódio: o papel da terra na cosmologia milenarista nos sertões do Brasil meridional. Com base em ritos funerários, o autor acaba por revelar outra face da ¿monarquia sertaneja¿, na qual a terra não é apenas o lugar da reprodução material da existência. Nessa perspectiva, o exótico e o monstruoso se transformam e o fanatismo religioso passa a ser chave lógica dessa racionalidade.
