The topic of this article is the new historicism, a term coined by the author to describe a method of criticism that has turned away from the formal, descontextualized analysis new criticism. Concerned with the embeddedness of cultural objects ( literary texts and other artifacts) in the contingencies of history, the new historicism distinguishes itself from traditional historicism in holding that human agency is inevitable in historical processes and that the critic can not suspend value judgements, nor should he approach the past in a spirit of veneration.Cultural objects have a resonance, that is, a power to evoke the cultural forces from which they emerged. They likewise have the power to arouse wonder, to convey an arresting sense of uniqueness. It is the interplay of the two - resonance and wonder - that the new historicism seeks to illuminate.||O tema deste artigo é o "novo historicismo", um termo forjado pelo autor para descrever um método crítico que se opõe ao formalismo descontextualizado do "new criticism" dominante. Preocupado com a inserção de objetos culturais (textos literários e outros artefatos) na história, o novo historicismo se distingue do historicismo tradicional por assumir que a intervenção individual no processo histórico é inevitável e que a crítica não pode suspender juízos de valor, nem deve abordar o passado com um espírito de veneração.
