The article examines how the America were portrayed in European iconography between the 16 th century and the Age of Enlightenment, with an emphasis on the illustrations that shed a reflective light on the problem of alterity. From this rich tapestry of protrayls we may highlight, despite the Papist enthusiasm, images of America as inferior and of the Indian as wild, a barbarian and not even human.||O artigo examina como a América foi representada na iconografia européia entre o século XVI e o Iluminismo, com ênfase em ilustrações que remetem à questão da alteridade. Através desse rico conjunto de representações, é possível ressaltar, apesar do entusiasmo papista, imagens da América como inferior e dos índios como selvagens, bárbaros e nem mesmo humanos.
