The text presents a history of literature in Brazil with emphasis on the imaginary evoked from the literary texts produced since the fifteenth century until today, that may be, in general, thus described: (a) in the sixteenth century, the paradise/fascination image of yhe new; (b) in the seventeenth century, the game of appearances; (c) the eighteenth century, the idea of independence, and, (d) in the nineteenth century, the radiography of the human soul. Then, the article highlights the greatest and expressive writers of Children ́s Literature in the country, coming to the discussion on the experiences developed in Brazilian schools with books of children ́s literature. In summary, it shows that the literary text must be seen as an encounter between the reader and the characters and allowing interpretations and developments of ideas and feelings. It strengthens further, children ́s literature as a bridge linking letters to the direction, analysis, interpretation, reality, dream, and to the imagination.||O texto apresenta uma retrospectiva histórica da literatura no Brasil com desta- ques para o imaginário evocado a partir dos textos literários produzidos desde o século XV até hoje, o qual pode ser, em linhas gerais, assim descrito: a) no século XVI, a imagem paradisíaca/a fascinação do novo; b) no século XVII, o jogo das aparências; c) no século XVIII, a idéia da independência; e (d) no século XIX, a radiografia da alma humana. Em seguida, este artigo destaca os escritores de maior expressão na Literatura Infantil no país, chegando à discussão sobre as experiências desenvolvidas, em escolas brasileiras, com livros de Literatura Infantil. Em síntese, mostra que o texto literário deve ser visto como um encontro entre o leitor e os personagens, que possibilita interpretações e desdobramentos de idéias e sentimentos. Reforça, ainda, a Literatura Infantil como ponte que liga as letras ao sentido, à análise, à interpretação, à realidade, ao sonho, à imaginação.Palavras-chave: Imaginário. Literatura Infantil.
