Historically, nurseries have had the responsability for day care and the provision of charitable assistance to children of the poorer communities. The nursery´s conception as an educational space rather than its original one as a place for assistance and keeping of children during role to a pedagogical one. The present study has had the objective of investigating the perceptions that child educators who work in the nurseries in the sity of maringá have about the nursery roles, It has also been investigated the teacher´s level of education and the type of activities carried out with children between 0 to 6 years old. In a first moment, a bibliographical survey was conducted on the role of child education and the teacher´s level of education needed to work in nurseries. Secondly, interviews with nursery teachers an empirical observations of the activities in the nurseries in Maringá were carried out. Analyzing the data collected it was possible to conclude that child educators are in teachers are not aware of important aspects of child development.||Historicamente, as creches têm desempenhado o papel de guarda e assistência caritativa às crianças pertencentes às classes menos favorecidas. A concepção de creche como espaço pedagógico em substituição ao entendimento original da creche como local de atendimento à saúde e guarda da criança durante a jornada de trabalho da mãe, trouxe para a educadora de creche o desafio de ultrapassar uma função meramente assistencialista para assumir uma função pedagógica. O presente estudo teve por objetivo investigar quais são as representações que as educadoras infantis que trabalham nas creches municipais maringaenses possuem sobre as funções da creche. Buscou-se ainda verificar qual é a formação dessas profissionais e o tipo de atividade desenvolvidas com crianças na faixa etária de 0 a 6 anos. No primeiro momento realizou-se um levantamento bibliográfico sobre a função da educação infantil e a formação dos educadores que atuam esse nível de ensino. Num segundo momento, de natureza empírica, foram realizadas entrevistas com as educadoras de creche e observações das atividades desenvolvidas nas creches municipais maringaenses. Com a análise dos dados foi possível constatar que as educadoras infantis carecem de uma formação mais específica quanto à sua função pedagógica dentro de um centro de educação infantil. Além disso, desconhecem aspectos relevantes do desenvolvimento infantil.
