This essay aims to reflect about the use of the biography as a way to build historical narratives and, also, the status of the biography in the historiography. Therefore, we undertake a reflection on the production of the Oreste Ristori’s biography, started as an academic study of the internationalists forms of organization and diffusion of anarchist movement between the 19th and 20th centuries. From that personal experience as a biography writer, the relationships between biography, history and historiography are discussed in this essay. Also, is shown the different biographical usages in history, the strategies to do the narrative, the relationship between the individual and the general, the subjectivity and the status of the individual as an historical category. It is analyzed the different perspectives on this literary genre and is debated specific issues of research focused on the writing of the biography.||Este ensaio busca refletir sobre o uso da biografia como forma de construção da narrativa histórica e discutir o estatuto da biografia no âmbito da historiografia. Para isso, empreendemos uma reflexão sobre a produção da biografia do italiano Oreste Ristori, iniciada como um estudo acadêmico das formas internacionalistas de organização e difusão do movimento anarquista entre os séculos XIX e XX. A partir dessa experiência pessoal na escrita de uma biografia, discutem-se as relações entre a biografia, a história e a historiografia: os diferentes usos das biografias na história, as formas de narratividade, a relação entre o particular e o geral, a preponderância da subjetividade e o indivíduo elevado à condição de categoria histórica. São analisadas as diferentes perspectivas sobre esse gênero literário e discutem-se questões específicas do método de pesquisa voltado para a escrita da biografia.
