In self-referential writing a new historical research locus becomes valued, private space in which the scriptural practices are defined. In this perspective the work with personal correspondence, is growing among historians and other scholars' “The History of intellectuals”, because of the maps provide information on the" private world "of these subjects. Understanding these documents as personal narrative expressing cultural and ideological dimensions and experiences is to consider the possibility of building an autobiography of the author of the letters. The letters exchanged between intellectuals of Piauí / Brazilian society, sources of this research work, deal with issues related to society, culture, politics and events promoted by Piauiense Academy of Letters and Oeiras History Institute of which PossidônioQueiroz - author of the letters in study - and his interlocutors were part. And greatly, aspects of their private lives, for what "the letter writer seems to say, to present a pose itself is simply'm here."||Neste texto abordo os cuidados teóricos e metodológicos que o historiador deve ter ao utilizar cartas pessoais como documentos históricos, ao mesmo tempo em que ressalto a importância de fontes como essa para a escrita da história, notadamente, quando se trata de temas e personagens comumente negligenciados ou silenciados pelos documentos e arquivos públicos e oficiais, como é o caso dos amores e amizades homoeróticos e de personagens homossexuais. Chamo atenção ainda para os limites e os cuidados éticos que o uso desse tipo de fonte requer da parte do historiador. Abordo, ainda, como o gênero epistolar permite tratar de temas como a escrita de si e a identidade de gênero.
