This paper investigates the concept of abduction in the novel The name of the rose, by Umberto Eco. The book, released in 1980, was a landmark in literature, gaining great influence both inside and outside academia. In its narrative, it is possible to see much of the academic aspect of its author, such as his studies in medieval philosophy. Besides that, Eco's philosophy was greatly influenced by Peirce and this is also noticeable in his works of fiction as well. That is the reason why this article analyzes the role of Peirce's abduction in Eco's first novel and how it works as a character development for the protagonist, Guilherme de Baskerville. For this, first, the influence of Peirce on Eco will be discussed. Then, Peirce's philosophy will be presented. And, finally, it will be analyzed how Peircean abduction is developed throughout the book The name of the rose.||Este artigo investiga a presença do conceito de abdução no romance O nome da rosa, de Umberto Eco. O livro lançado em 1980 foi um marco na literatura, ganhando grande influência tanto dentro como fora dos meios acadêmicos. Nele, é possível ver muito do aspecto acadêmico de seu autor, como seus estudos em filosofia medieval. Porém, a filosofia de Eco foi grandemente influenciada por Charles Sanders Peirce e isso é perceptível em suas obras de ficção também. Por isso, este artigo analisa o papel da abdução peirceana no romance de Eco e como ela serve de desenvolvimento de personagem para o protagonista, Guilherme de Baskerville. Para isso, primeiro será discutida a influência de Peirce em Eco. Depois será apresentada a filosofia de Peirce. Nessa apresentação, maior importância será dada para o conceito de abdução. E, por fim, será analisado como a abdução peirceana se faz notada em O nome da rosa.
