RESUMO
Resumo: A imprensa constituiu um dos principais meios de atuação dos movimentos republicanos no Brasil do século XIX. De forma esquemática e precisa, o que os jornalistas republicanos buscaram fazer durante o período da campanha foi de um lado, projetar a ideia de uma grave crise do sistema monárquico e, de outro, oferecer uma opção, por eles considerada, mais acertada e progressista para organização do Estado. Nosso objetivo neste artigo é destacar a atuação política do periódico A Federação na Campanha Republicana no final do século XIX. Criado em 1884 como órgão do Partido Republicano, o periódico desempenhou um importante papel na disseminação dos valores republicanos e na crítica sistemática aos valores monárquicos. Acompanhamos a combativa atuação do periódico no ano de sua fundação e, por fim, trouxemos a repercussão, em suas páginas, da tão desejada Proclamação da República em 1889.

ABSTRACT
The press was one of the main means of action of republican movements in Brazil in the 19th century. In a schematic and precise way, what the republican journalists sought to do during the campaign period was, on the one hand, to project the idea of a serious crisis of the monarchical system and, on the other, to offer a option, considered by them, more correct and progressive for the organization of the State. Our aim in this article is to highlight the political performance of the newspaper The Federation in the Republican Campaign at the end of the 19th century. Created in 1884 as organ of the Republican Party, the newspaper played an important role in the dissemination of republican values and in the systematic criticism of monarchical values. We followed the combative performance of the newspaper in the year of its foundation and, finally, we brought the repercussion, in its pages, of the much desired Proclamation of the Republic in 1889.
