In this article I aim to understand how the romance Úrsula, written by Maria Firmina dos Reis represents a new kind of artistic and social creation in the XIXth century in Brazil. I discuss such innovation from the author’s biography and from a historiographical approach I aim to comprehend how the treatment is given in this book to the Black characters and to the theme of slavery.||Neste artigo busco entender como o romance Úrsula, de Maria Firmina dos Reis, representa uma inovadora criação artística e social no século XIX brasileiro. Discuto tal inovação a partir da própria biografia da autora e, a partir de uma abordagem historiográfica, procuro compreender como se dá o tratamento dos personagens negros e do tema da escravidão nesta obra.
