The request for registration of the Cordel Literature as immaterial heritage of Brazil, demanded by Academia Brasileira de Literatura Cordel to Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN) inscribes itself at the final act of the so-called “patrimonial chain”, and, when titled, it will be recognized as a living cultural heritage – voice expression, memory and body of its reciters; a Brazilian popular art and symbol of a Brazilian northwestern culture that made the migratory process the joust between the oral and the written in the conquest of the national territory. But, rather, it is the process of constructing the senses of immaterial cultural heritage and the long path to the patrimonialisation of Cordel Literature that this article is about. Considering the nature and trajectory of Cordel Literature, we aim to point out some conceptual and institutional frameworks that allows us to perceive the displacements of meanings that the concept of popular culture gained along the trajectories of public policies of preservation from folklore to immaterial heritage. The experience of the project entitled “Literatura de Cordel” of the Centro de Referência Cultural do Ceará (CERES) – from 1975 to 1979 – in mapping and recording the memory of traditional popular culture in the state of Ceará, Brazil, will be our inflection point.||O pedido de registro da Literatura de Cordel como patrimônio imaterial do Brasil, requerido pela Academia Brasileira de Literatura de Cordel ao Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional-IPHAN, inscreve-se no ato final da chamada “cadeia patrimonial” e, quando titulado, será reconhecido um patrimônio cultural vivo – expressão da voz, memória e corpo de seus narradores; uma arte popular brasileira e símbolo de uma cultura do Nordeste que fez do processo migratório a peleja entre o oral e o escrito na conquista do território nacional. Mas, antes, é do processo de construção dos sentidos de patrimônio cultural imaterial e do longo caminho da patrimonialização do Cordel que este artigo trata. Considerando a natureza e a trajetória da Literatura de Cordel, objetivamos pontuar alguns marcos conceituais e institucionais que nos possibilitem perceber os deslocamentos de sentidos que a noção de cultura popular ganhou ao longo das trajetórias das políticas públicas de preservação indo do folclore ao patrimônio imaterial. A experiência do Projeto Literatura de Cordel do Centro de Referência Cultural do Ceará – CERES (1975-1979) no mapeamento e registro da memória da cultura popular tradicional no estado será o ponto de inflexão.
