O presente estudo tem o objetivo de refletir acerca da cultura de viola na região de São João del-Rei na segunda metade do século XX. Através da análise de bibliografia especializada, periódicos de época e, sobretudo com base em relatos de violeiros e foliões, conseguimos traçar um pouco da trajetória deste instrumento na região. Identificamos uma forte presença da viola nas manifestações populares na segunda metade do século XIX e uma escassez deste instrumento na cidade, nas práticas de música popular ao longo do século XX.||This study intends to reflect on the culture of viola at the São João del Rei area in the second half of the century. XX. Through literature analysis specialist periodicals season and especially on the basis of guitar players and revelers reports we can trace some of the history of this instrument in the region. We identified a strong presence viola in the popular culture in the second half of the nineteenth century and a shortage of this instrument in the city in popular music practices throughout the twentieth century.
