A multiple case study and an explanatory research were carried on by interviewing 13 patients of an outpatient clinic for chemical dependency of the Brazilian Navy, in order to exam the institution's role in the construction of the patients’ alcoholism. The central objective of this article was to discuss one of the aspects of the main research: the reasons involving the attribution of labels to patients and their effects. Sampling, data collection, analysis and interpretation of data were conducted in a circular manner. Amongst the results, it could be observed the social dynamics of stigmatization, resulting from the peculiarities of the naval institution functioning that helps to post a label of inferiority in these individuals, and that exacerbates the course of their involvement with alcohol. The elucidation on the various aspects involved in the construction of alcoholism allows perceiving these patients free of tags, enabling the adoption of protective measures to the employee.Keywords: alcoholism; stigma; military; working conditions.||Um estudo de casos múltiplos e explanatório foi realizado entrevistando 13 pacientes de um ambulatório de dependência química da Marinha do Brasil, objetivando examinar o papel da instituição na construção do alcoolismo dos pacientes. O objetivo central deste artigo foi discutir um dos resultados da pesquisa central: as razões que envolvem a atribuição dos rótulos aos pacientes e seus efeitos. A amostragem, a coleta, análise e interpretação dos dados foram feitas de forma circular. Dentre os resultados, constatou-se que existe uma sociodinâmica da estigmatização resultante de conjunturas peculiares ao funcionamento da instituição naval, que ajudam a afixar um rótulo de inferioridade nesses indivíduos e que podem exacerbar o curso do envolvimento com o álcool. O esclarecimento sobre os diversos aspectos envolvidos na construção do alcoolismo ajuda a ver esses pacientes livres de rótulos, permitindo a adoção de medidas de proteção ao trabalhador.
