Grupos de jovens e suas intervenções artísticas estão mudando o caráter do espaço público em São Paulo. Uma proporção significativa dos novos produtores culturais vem das periferias. Por meio de suas atividades, eles não só afirmam sua existência na cidade e fazem valer seu direito de usar seus espaços, como também começam a dominar a produção de representações. Não mais representados por outros que dominavam a produção de signos, os jovens das periferias agora impõem suas representações à cidade. Desse modo, eles desestabilizam o sistema de produção cultural, relações sociais e regras para o uso do espaço público dominado pelas classes altas. Essas transformações são substanciais, mas não sem contradições profundas. Dentre elas, uma das mais proeminentes é a reprodução de desigualdades de gênero.||Youth groups and their artistic interventions are changing the character of the public space in São Paulo. A significant proportion of the new cultural producers come from the peripheries. Through their activities, they not only affirm their existence in the city and assert their right to use its spaces, but also start to master the production of representations. No longer represented by others who used to dominate the production of signs, young people from the peripheries now force their own representations onto the city. Thus, they destabilize the previously established system of signs for cultural production, social relations, and rules for the use of public space dominated by the upper classes. These transformations are substantial, but not without deep contradictions. One of the most salient of them is the reproduction of gender inequalities.
