In the collection of solid residues, gender issues are crossed, which establish different dynamics for the work of women. The objective is to investigate the perceptions of women about their insertion in the work of picking in recycling associations in Caxias do Sul / RS. The analysis of seven interviews conducted with waste pickers was carried out, through content analysis. Three categories were established: Precarious work; Leadership and protagonism; Perception of being a waste picker. It was found that the waste pickers are protagonists of their history and the construction of the profession. This analysis is not exhausted, deserving future investigations for which the interface between work and motherhood stands out.||Na catação de resíduos sólidos atravessam-se questões de gênero que estabelecem diferentes dinâmicas para o trabalho da mulher. Objetiva-se investigar as percepções das mulheres sobre sua inserção no trabalho da catação nas associações de reciclagem de Caxias do Sul/RS. Elaborou-se a análise de sete entrevistas realizadas com catadoras, por meio de análise de conteúdo. Estabeleceu-se três categorias: Precariedade do trabalho; Liderança e protagonismo; Percepção de ser catadora. Constatou-se que as catadoras são protagonistas de sua história e da construção da profissão. Esta análise não se esgota, merecendo futuras investigações as quais se destaca a interface entre trabalho e maternidade.
