As relações entre arte e morte são mais intrincadas do que se parece à pri-
meira vista. A ciência da irreparabilidade da morte impulsionou o ser humano
à criação das imagens, que viriam a substituir os mortos e fazer dos cemitérios
antigos, os nossos primeiros museus. A partir disso, esta dissertação tem o
objetivo de analisar o acervo artístico tumular do Cemitério de Santo Ama-
ro, no Recife, sob a ótica das artes visuais, destacando as representações do
corpo feminino e as fórmulas que elas evocam, com a finalidade de fortalecer
os cemitérios secularizados como locais de pesquisa e laboratório de análise
imagética. Para criar uma narrativa sobre esses entrecruzamentos entre os
temas da morte e a arte, é feita uma discussão teórica inicial com o suporte vi-
sual da estética mortuária clássica, que cria um terreno favorável para notar a
sobrevivência de fórmulas antigas nas artes tumulares do cemitério referido,
com destaque para o corpo feminino. Bem como é feito um apanhado sobre a
instauração do Cemitério de Santo Amaro no Recife, passeando brevemente
pelas questões particulares a este cemitério. Através da abordagem do histo-
riador de arte alemão Aby Warburg, é possível traçar um caminho para anali-
sar as representações desse corpo feminino nas artes tumulares e as fórmu-
las interpretativas que elas continuam a evocar na contemporaneidade, bem
como mostrar a repetição de tais fórmulas funerárias em outros contextos e
suportes artísticos de modo a proporcionar uma discussão acerca da natu-
ralização dos temas da morte e do espaço cemiterial que tantos elos possui
com o mundo dos vivos e concluir que as representações femininas na arte
tumular do cemitério são de fato testemunhos visuais de como a sociedade
via e representava as mulheres de finais do século XIX e início do século XX.||The relationships between art and death is more intricate than it seems at
first glance. The science of the irreparability of death drove human beings
to create images, which would come to replace the dead and make ancient
cemeteries our first museums. Based on this, this dissertation aims to analyze
the tomb artistic collection of the Santo Amaro Cemetery, in Recife, from the
optic of visual arts, highlighting the representations of the female body and
the formulas they evoke, with the purpose of strengthening the secularized
cemeteries as research sites and image analysis laboratories. To create a
narrative about these intersections between the themes of death and art,
an initial theoretical discussion is made with the visual support of classical
mortuary aesthetics, which creates a favorable terrain to note the survival
of ancient formulas in the tomb arts of the aforementioned cemetery, with
emphasis on the female body. As well as an overview of the installation of the
Santo Amaro Cemetery in Recife, briefly going through the particular issues
relating to this cemetery. Through the approach of German art historian Aby
Warburg, it is possible to trace a path to analyze the representations of this
female body in tomb arts and the interpretative formulas that they continue
to evoke in contemporary times, as well as showing the repetition of such
funerary formulas in other contexts and artistic supports in order to provide
a discussion on the naturalization of the themes of death and the cemetery
space that has so many links with the world of the living and conclude that
female representations in cemetery tomb art are in fact visual testimonies of
how society viewed and represented women of the late 19th and early 20th
centuries.
