Joseph, or José, Benoliel (1857–1937) was a poet, translator and orientalist from Tangier who settled in Portugal around 1881. A Jew of Sephardic origin, he distinguished himself as a Hebraist and an Arabist. He wrote in Portuguese, Spanish, French and Hebrew, translated from and into Portuguese, and he socialised with the Portuguese intelligentsia at the turn of the century, assisting them with his linguistic skills. This essay intends to map the translingual practices (Kellman, 2020), both literary and academic-scientific, of this polyglot migrant. These practices include authorial creation directly in different languages, translation, and linguistic consultancy. This mapping exercise will help identify Benoliel’s networks of interpersonal collaboration and intellectual dialogue built in and also from Portugal, which have promoted the consolidation of the translingual polyglot.||Joseph, ou José, Benoliel (1857–1937) foi um poeta, tradutor e orientalista natural de Tânger que se estabeleceu em Portugal por volta de 1881. Judeu de origem sefardita, distinguiu-se como hebraísta e arabista; escreveu em português, espanhol, francês e hebraico, traduziu de e para português e sociabilizou com a intelectualidade portuguesa de viragem do século, que serviu com as suas competências linguísticas. Neste ensaio, mapeiam-se as práticas de translinguismo (Kellman, 2020), tanto literário como académico-científico, deste migrante poliglota. Essas práticas incluem a criação autoral, diretamente em diferentes línguas, a tradução e também a consultoria, ou assessoria, linguística. Neste exercício de mapeamento, identificar-se-ão as redes de colaboração interpessoais e de diálogo intelectual construídas em e também a partir de Portugal, as quais potenciaram a consolidação do poliglota translingue.
