This essay focuses on the recently discovered manuscript “Os filhos da coruja” (“The children of the owl”), dated of 1923 and signed by J. Calisto, one of the pseudonyms used by Graciliano Ramos. It is a narrative in verse that retells a fable collected by the celebrated French writer La Fontaine. After analyse the materiality of the document, recovering the tradition of publishing this story in Brazil and making considerations about the nom de plume used by Graciliano Ramos, this article uses data from his biography and work to present an interpretative hypothesis about the text in dialogue with Paulo Freire’s proposal.||O presente ensaio toma como objeto o manuscrito recém-descoberto “Os filhos da coruja”, datado de 1923 e assinado por J. Calisto, um dos pseudônimos empregados por Graciliano Ramos. Trata-se de uma narrativa em versos que reconta uma fábula recolhida pelo celebrado escritor francês La Fontaine. Depois de abordar a materialidade do documento, recuperar a tradição de publicação dessa história no Brasil e tecer considerações a respeito da alcunha utilizada pelo autor alagoano, o artigo se vale de dados da biografia e da obra dele para lançar hipótese interpretativa sobre o texto em diálogo com proposta de Paulo Freire.
