Translating Machado raised several challenges before I could indulge in pursuing his style in my mother tongue. The prospect of translating his short story “O Cônego ou a metafísica do estilo” into French, considering it had already been translated by Adrien Delpech in 1910 (a corrected translation was republished in 1997) seduced me immediately. The following is my translation along with a few comments on the task peformed.||Traduzir Machado de Assis suscitou vários desafios, antes do prazer de procurar de maneira palpável seu estilo na minha língua materna. A perspectiva de traduzir o conto “O Cônego ou a metafísica do estilo”, já traduzido para o francês por Adrien Delpech, em 1910, tradução corrigida e reeditada em 1997, me seduziu de imediato.
