O painel Guernica de Picasso é uma das obras mais vistas e influentes do século XX. Mais do que simplesmente uma obra de arte moderna decisiva, sua imagem marcou o imaginário do século, tornando-se quase uma imagem-símbolo de problemas extra-artísticos como as guerras, a injustiça social, etc. Ao mesmo tempo, sua vinda ao Brasil para a Bienal de 1953, centraliza um debate que já havia se iniciado e que terá consequências fundamentais para a história da arte brasileira: o debate entre figurativos e abstratos. Dos anos 50 até pelo menos os anos 1980, o quadro será elemento de polêmicas e de recontextualizações expressivas no debate artístico e político local, tanto quanto o foi no resto do mundo. Este artigo discute as circunstâncias históricas e os usos que deram à imagem desta obra de Picasso sua força permanente no imaginário social e na cultura artística e política contemporânea.||Picasso´s panel, Guernica, is one of the most seen and influential work of art of the twentieth century. More than simply an important modern work of art, its image marked the imaginary of the century, becoming almost an image-symbol of extra-artistic ´s problems as wars, social injustice, etc. At the same time, its exhibitions in Brazil during the Biennial of art in 1953, centralized a discussion that had already been started and that would have some fundamental consequences to Brazil´s history of art: the debate between figurative and abstractive. From the fifties until at least the 1980´s, Guernica would be an element of controversy and of expressive recontextualisetion in the artistic debate and local politics, as it was all over the world. This article discusses the historical circumstances and the uses that gave to the image of this Picasso´s work its permanent strength in the social imaginary, in the artistic culture and in the contemporary politics.
