Felisberto Caldeira Brant Pontes de Oliveira e Horta, future Marquis of Barbacena in the Empire of Brazil, is normally remembered in Brazilian historiography as a prominent figure in Brazilian national politics in the First Reign. Felisberto, in fact, is one of the relevant characters in the political plot that culminated in the abdication of D. Pedro I on April 7, 1831. However, another facet of this character is largely unknown to the reading public: his role as a “businessman” in the Bahia in the first half of the 19th century. This article aims to scrutinize this role, highlighting how the business networks developed by Felisberto were essential for him to be able to get closer to the imperial political center, firstly the Joanina Court and, later, in independent Brazil, leading him to become one of the trusted men of the first Brazilian emperor.||Felisberto Caldeira Brant Pontes de Oliveira e Horta, futuro marquês de Barbacena no Império do Brasil, é normalmente recordado na historiografia brasileira como figura de realce na política nacional brasileira no Primeiro Reinado. Felisberto, inclusive, é um dos personagens relevantes na trama política que culminou na abdicação de D. Pedro I em 7 de abril 1831. Todavia, uma outra faceta desse personagem é amplamente desconhecida pelo público leitor: sua atuação como “homem de negócios” na Bahia na primeira metade do século XIX. O presente artigo visa esmiuçar esse papel, destacando como as redes de negócios desenvolvidas por Felisberto foram primordiais para que ele pudesse se aproximar do centro político imperial, primeiramente da Corte joanina e, posteriormente, já no Brasil independente, o levasse a se tornar um dos homens de confiança do primeiro imperador brasileiro.
