O artigo analisa a presença e atuação dos imigrantes portugueses estabelecidos na cidade do Rio de Janeiro no século XIX, período de transição da escravidão para o trabalho livre, do desenvolvimento incipiente da indústria e do mercado financeiro. Uma fração dos imigrados acumulou fortuna em atividades beneficiadas pela acelerada expansão da economia urbana (comércio, finança, indústria, mercado imobiliário), participou de forma significativa do desenvolvimento econômico do Rio de Janeiro e constituiu uma elite no interior da colônia. A ascensão econômica dos imigrantes de “grossa fortuna” foi acompanhada pela busca do prestígio social e de símbolos de distinção social (comendas e títulos de nobreza) por meio de doações e o patrocínio de instituições culturais e filantrópicas que constituem, até hoje, a base da presença portuguesa na cidade. Essas questões foram problematizadas pela elaboração de microbiografias de três gerações de empresários da elite da colônia portuguesa.||The article analyzes the presence and activities of Portuguese immigrants established in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century, a period of transition from slavery to free labor, the incipient development of industry and the financial market. A fraction of the immigrants accumulated wealth in activities that benefited from the accelerated expansion of the urban economy (trading, finance, industry, real estate), were a significant part in the economic development of Rio de Janeiro and formed an elite within the colony. The economic rise of the immigrants of "great fortune" was accompanied by the search for social prestige and symbols of social distinction (commendations and titles of nobility) through donations and the sponsorship of cultural and philanthropic institutions that are, until today, the basis of the Portuguese presence in the city. These issues were problematized by drawing up microbiographies of three generations of businessmen from the elite of the Portuguese colony.
