Este artigo objetiva discutir o conto O fantasma de Canterville, de Oscar Wilde, publicado originalmente em 1887, focando numa leitura crítica que discute a paródia de elementos estéticos da literatura de tradição gótica. Nessa narrativa, Wilde recorre a clichês, elementos do espaço narrativo e da atmosfera e personagens comuns do romance gótico, mas subverte-os, transformando-os em recursos do cômico através da ironia e homenageando toda a tradição gótica inglesa anterior ao seu tempo. O estudo baseia-se em concepções teóricas sobre a paródia moderna e pós-moderna a partir de considerações de Linda Hutcheon (1978) e Walter Moser (1992).
||This article aims at discussing the short story The Canterville ghost, by Oscar Wilde, first published in 1887. The focus is on a critical reading that discusses the parody of aesthetical features of the gothic tradition in literature. In Wilde´s narrative, clichés, elements of the narrative space, atmosphere and common characters of the gothic novel are used, but the author subverts them, transforming them in comic resources through irony and paying homage to the whole gothic tradition that came before his time. The study is based on theories about the modern and the post modern parody considerations from Linda Hutcheon (1978) and Walter Moser (1992).
