This article aims to analyze the short story Razza maledetta, written by Carolina Invernizio (1851-1916) and published in the collection Nella rete in 1900, highlighting the Gothic and horrific elements of the characters Toni and Mary, namely, the explicit and implicit monstrosity that manifests at different moments in the plot. Simultaneously, there will be a reflection on possible political and sociological meanings of horror in the aforementioned story, and on the author's modus operandi in using characteristic elements of Gothic and horror to describe and incorporate women’s experiences in Italian society at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Firstly, a reflection on the absence of women and the Gothic in the Italian literary canon is presented, followed by biobibliographical aspects about the author, and finally, the presentation and analysis of the short story, as indicated.||Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar o conto Razza maledetta [Raça maldita], escrito por Carolina Invernizio (1851-1916) e publicado na coletânea Nella rete [Na rede] em 1900, evidenciando os elementos goticizantes e horroríficos dos personagens Toni e Mary, a saber, a monstruosidade explícita e implícita que se manifesta em momentos diferentes da trama. Ao mesmo tempo, será feita uma reflexão sobre possíveis significados políticos e sociológicos do horror no referido conto, e sobre o modus operandi da autora ao utilizar elementos característicos do gótico e do horror para descrever e incorporar as vivências das mulheres na sociedade italiana na passagem do século XIX para o século XX. Primeiramente, é feita uma reflexão sobre a ausência das mulheres e do Gótico no cânone literário italiano, em seguida, apresentam-se aspectos biobibliográficos sobre a autora, por fim, segue-se a apresentação e a análise do conto, conforme indicado.
