The contrapositions between the appreciation of historical and/or collective memory and the devaluation of individual memory in modern theorizations on the shiping (bildung, paideia) of men are discussed. Examining Montaigne and Borges' critical absolutization, the author points out how memory is perceived as an obstacle to the exercise of discernment and of individual autonomy as well as to the construction of the "self", the "I". The contradictions present in Montaigne are re-structured on the basis of the existence of two worlds, the public and the private, and on the relegation of autonomy to the sphere of the latter and of conformism to the sphere of the former. The opposition between - and the desire to conjoin - illuminism and romantism forms the background against which we can understand the dynamics of contrapositions concerning memory which are to be found in modern conceptions on the shaping of men.||Este artigo discute as oposições entre memória histórica e/ou coletiva e memória individual nas teorias modernas acerca da formação (bildung, paideia) dos homens. A partir de Montaigne e da absolutização crítica de Borges, o autor discute como a memória é muitas vezes vista como obstáculo ao exercício do discernimento e da autonomia individual, assim como para a construção do "eu". As contradições presentes em Montaigne são aqui reestruturadas com base na existência de dois mundos, o público e o privado, de modo que a autonomia fica referida à esfera deste último enquanto o conformismo caberia ao primeiro. A oposição entre Iluminismo e Romantismo (e o desejo de junção) compõe o pano de fundo a partir do qual é possível compreender, segundo o autor, a dinâmica das contraposições que envolvem a memória e que aparecem nas concepções modernas acerca da formação do homem.
