O movimento indígena equatoriano tem se constituído como um dos atores sociais mais importantes daquele país. Entre as organizações responsáveis pelo seu revigoramento merece destaque a Confederação das Nacionalidades Indígenas do Equador – CONAIE. Este artigo tem como objetivo central compreender o processo de transformação da identidade e do discurso de legitimação política da CONAIE buscando, por intermédio do estudo de suas práticas políticas desenvolvidas entre 1990 e 2000, discuti-la como principal força popular do Equador nesse período e uma das principais forças políticas antissistêmicas da América Latina na atualidade.||The Ecuadorean indigenous movement has constituted itself as a one of the most important social actors of that country. Among the organizations responsible for the political reinvigoration of the indigenous movement, emphasis must be placed on the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE). The central goal of this article is to understand the process of transformation of the identity and the discourse of political legitimation of the CONAIE. It seeks, through the study of practices and political actions developed between 1990 and 2000, to portray this entity as the principle popular force in Ecuador during this period and one of the principle anti-systemic forces in contemporary Latin America.
