This article analyzes the representation of the Amazon region in the geopolitical thinking of military intellectuals Golbery do Couto e Silva (1913-1987) and Carlos de Meira Mattos (1913-2007) between the 1950s and 1970s. The central hypothesis of the work is based on the understanding that before representing just a region in the geographical sense, the Amazon has a symbolic and decisive character in the production of Brazilian geopolitical thinking in the post-World War II period, being intrinsically related to the concept of development and to a political imaginary, constituted by a strong idea of future time, which can be called "Brazil power". That said, this reflection seeks to contribute to the effort to understand themes such as "sertão", "conquest of the west" and "frontiers", but innovates in that it focuses on the role of the Amazon rainforest in Brazilian political thought. It is precisely this last issue that this paper deals with, seeking to demonstrate how the "Amazon", as a symbolic space, figured in the thinking of Brazilian military intellectuals in the post-war period.
||Este artigo analisa a figuração da região amazônica no pensamento geopolítico dos intelectuais militares Golbery do Couto e Silva (1913-1987) e Carlos de Meira Mattos (1913-2007) entre as décadas de 1950 e 1970. A hipótese central do trabalho parte do entendimento que antes de representar apenas uma região no sentido geográfico, a Amazônia possuiu um caráter simbólico e determinante na produção do pensamento geopolítico brasileiro do pós-II Guerra Mundial. Essa mobilização estava intrinsecamente relacionada ao conceito de desenvolvimento e a um imaginário político, constituído por uma forte ideia de tempo futuro, que pode ser denominado de “Brasil potência”. Dito isto, esta reflexão procura contribuir para o esforço de entendimento de temas como “sertão”, “conquista do oeste” e "fronteiras", mas inovando na medida em que o enfoque recai sobre o papel da floresta amazônica no pensamento político brasileiro. É justamente sobre essa última questão que este trabalho se debruça, procura demonstrar como a “Amazônica”, enquanto espaço simbólico, figurou na reflexão de intelectuais militares brasileiro do período do pós-Guerra.
