This article deals with social dynamic processes ocurring in some traditional communities, like Machadinha, hailed from slaves descendants and located in the municipality of Quissamã, in the north of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Historically forgotten by the public powers and doomed to the failure of its material and immaterial patrimony, these communities are being studied and sustained by different agencies of modernization (Non Government Organizations, Midia, etc) who earnestly participate in reconstructing the communitarian knowledge and its spaces, trying to reproduce in the present their ¿authentic past¿ through modern methods and techniques. We denominate these territories ¿new communities¿ and suggest that they are in an ambiguous situation between the tradition and modernization, oscillating within these two poles of tensions and relations of mutual dependency. Key words: traditional communities, popular culture, tradition and modernization||Este artigo trata sobre a dinâmica socio-cultural que vem acontecendo em algumas comunidades do Brasil e da América Latina. Comunidades, com identidades étnicas ou históricas distintivas, por longo tempo esquecidas, sendo visitadas, freqüentadas, por ¿agentes externos¿ gerando ambiências culturais sui generis. Denominamos este processo de Neocomunidades, enquanto os agentes da modernidade (ONG's, Mídia, etc.) atuam ativamente na reconstrução de saberes e territórios comunitários. Sugerimos, que as neocomunidades situam-se em um lugar ambíguo entre a tradição e a modernidade gerando tensões e relações de mutua dependência.
