The Mercosur-European Union Agreement has been under discussion for more than twenty years. The objective of this article is to investigate the domestic and sectoral conflicts within the two blocs vis-à-vis the progress of the agreement in principle. Based on a bibliographical and documentary analysis, it is argued that the socio-political divergences inside each block can explain the difficulty in ratifying the agreement and points out a new abyss in North-South relations.||O Acordo Mercosul-União Europeia está em discussão há mais de vinte anos entre os dois blocos. O objetivo deste artigo é investigar os conflitos domésticos e setoriais nos âmbitos dos dois blocos face ao avanço do acordo de princípio. Com base na análise bibliográfica e documental, apresenta-se um quadro das divergências sociopolíticas que podem explicar as dificuldades para ratificar o acordo, e aponta-se para um novo abismo nas relações Norte-Sul.
