RESUMO
Este trabalho tem como tema a formação e história urbana do Bairro Belém Novo, entre os anos 1870 e 1970, primeiros 100 anos de sua existência. O objetivo principal deste estudo está em remontar esse primeiro século de história do bairro a partir de notícias, reportagens e publicidades encontradas em jornais e revistas locais acessados em acervos digitais e físicos de Porto Alegre. Busca-se entender como eram evidenciadas pela mídia impressa as transformações de estrutura urbana, bem como aspectos culturais, sociais e econômicos nos dois períodos que dividem o trabalho, de 1870 a 1920, anos de sua formação como uma freguesia, e de 1920 a 1970, anos de sua função de balneário do lago Guaíba. Entender a trajetória histórica de Belém Novo servirá para dar suporte a diretrizes para o seu planejamento urbano e ambiental.

ABSTRACT
This work has as its theme the formation and urban history of Belém Novo Neighborhood, between the years 1870 and 1970, the first 100 years of its existence. The main objective of this study is to trace the first century of the neighborhood’s history based on news, reports and advertisements found in local newspapers and magazines accessed in Porto Alegre’s digital and physical collections. It seeks to understand how the transformations of urban structure were evidenced by the printed media, as well cultural, social and economic aspects in the two periods that divide work, from 1870 to 1920, years of its formation as a parish, and from 1920 to 1970, years of its function as a bathing resort in Guaíba lake. Understanding the historical trajectory of Belém Novo will serve to support the guidelines for its urban and environmental planning.
