This article approaches the relation of the photography as a cultural history, because the first papers about photography in Brazil were accomplished with theoretical and methodological basis of the cultural history. Later on the photography started to get closer to the visual culture, providing support for discussions about its utilization on human sciences. Firstly, there were some discussions about the cultural history field in Brazil, next, the photography on the cultural perspective and its use for the knowledge production, providing us a notion about its cultural expression.||O artigo aborda a relação da fotografia como a história cultural, pois os primeiros trabalhos sobre fotografia no Brasil foram realizados com o embasamento teórico e metodológico da História Cultural. Mais tarde, a fotografia começou a ser aproximada da cultura visual, dando suporte para as discussões sobre suas utilizações nas ciências humanas. Num primeiro momento, algumas discussões sobre o campo da História Cultural no Brasil, e a seguir, a fotografia no panorama cultural e suas utilizações para a produção do conhecimento, nos dando uma noção de sua expressão cultural.
