In the wake of Tarallo’s (1993) well-known diagnosis of the emergence, at the end of the 19th century, of a Brazilian grammar that was radically different from the Lusitanian one, this article intends to focus on the ongoing linguistic-cultural debate that accompanied this process of differentiation between the two varieties of Portuguese in Brazil, and which certainly goes beyond mere grammatical codification. In this sense, instead of the Brazilian grammars of the Portuguese language, the production of which intensified from the 1880s onwards, the field of research here will consist of a single work, O idioma do hodierno portugal comparado com o do Brazil (1879), by the philologist José Jorge Paranhos da Silva and apparently separate from that grammaticalographic strand, In fact, it is the ‘first text that deals systematically with the Portuguese spoken in Brazil’ (Cavaliere, 2019), andwhere we can perhaps glimpse the seminal, albeit controversial, dawning of an imaginary, at least information, of what the Brazilian Portuguese of the future will be.||Na esteira do bem conhecido diagnóstico de Tarallo (1993) a respeito da emergência, no final do século XIX, de uma gramática brasileira radicalmente distinta da lusitana, este artigo pretende se debruçar sobre o contemporâneo debate linguístico-cultural que no Brasil acompanha tal processo de diferenciação das duas variedades de português e que decerto ultrapassa o plano da mera codificação gramatical. Neste sentido, ao invés das gramáticas brasileiras de língua portuguesa, cuja produção se intensifica a partir da década de 1880, o campo de pesquisa será aqui constituído por uma única obra, O idioma do hodierno portugal comparado com o do Brasil (1879), da autoria do filólogo José Jorge Paranhos da Silva e aparentemente alheia àquele filão gramaticográfico, mas que, de certa forma o integra e até o antecipa, sendo, de fato, ela o “primeiro texto que trata sistemicamente do português falado no Brasil” (Cavaliere, 2019), e onde talvez já se possa entrever o seminal, embora controverso, despontar de um imaginário, ao menos em formação, do que será o português brasileiro do futuro.
