This work aims to demonstrate the affiliation of the novella The Great God Pan, by Arthur Machen (1863-1947), to the gothic literature, emphasizing primordially the treatment given by the author to the female characters. The representations of women in this work refer to two distinct profiles of the Victorian woman: the submissive woman and the femme fatale. Interweaving elements such as paganism, occultism, and the supernatural, Machen creates a narrative in which the sense of fear and horror is constructed through a kind of game of exhibition and concealment, which has in the character Helen Vaughan the embodiment of evil, understood as a destabilizing force of the values of patriarchy.||Este trabalho visa a demonstrar a filiação da novela O grande deus Pã, de Arthur Machen (1863-1947), à literatura gótica, enfatizando primordialmente o tratamento dado pelo autor às personagens femininas. As representações da mulher nessa obra reportam-se a dois perfis distintos da mulher vitoriana: a mulher submissa e a femme fatale. Entrelaçando elementos como paganismo, ocultismo e o sobrenatural, Machen cria uma narrativa em que a sensação de medo e horror é construída por meio de um jogo de exposição e ocultação, que tem na personagem Helen Vaughan a personificação do mal, compreendido como uma força desestabilizadora dos valores do patriarcado.
