O artigo intenta esmiuçar a origem, características, principais divisões ou subgêneros e a pertinência do horror nas artes, principalmente na literatura. Ainda busca distinguir horror das noções de medo e terror, uma vez que frequentemente os três conceitos são confundidos entre si, portanto, essa é uma demarcação difícil e até mesmo polêmica. Para tanto, conceitos de psicanálise, teoria literária, mitologia, história e até biologia são mobilizados, para assim desvendar a imensa penetração e o intenso fascínio que este gênero fantástico exerce no imaginário desde épocas muito recuadas, e também buscar compreender sua posição na cultura da modernidade desde a sua afirmação nesta, no segundo quartel do século XVIII.||The article intends to scrutinize the origin, distinctive characteristics, main divisions or subgenres and the relevance of horror in the arts, mainly in literature. It intends, too, to distinguish horror from the concepts of fear and terror, since the three ideas are frequently and almost universally confused with each other, so this is a difficult and even controversial delimitation. To this end, concepts from psychoanalysis, literary theory, mythology, history and even biology are mobilized and related, in order to reveal the immense penetration and intense fascination that this fantastic genre exercises in the imagination of so many cultures since ancient times, and also seeks to understand its position in the culture of modernity since its affirmation, in the second quarter of the 18th century.
