It is common to find, in Philosophy of Science literature, Charles S. Peirce’s abduction, or abductive reasoning, as synonymous with Gilbert Harman’s inference to the best explanation (IBE). However, although this identification is frequent, some authors have suggested that this may be a misunderstanding caused by the poor contextualization of the concept of abduction in peircean philosophy. Therefore, this article seeks to offer an exegetical analysis of both the concept of abduction and the inference to the best explanation, in order to clarify the issue. I argue that Peirce’s abduction should not be taken as equivalent to Harman’s inference to the best explanation, since abduction describes the creative generation of hypotheses, while IBE describes the selection process of the most explanatory hypothesis among a previously formulated set of alternatives.||É comum encontrar, na literatura de Filosofia da Ciência, a abdução, ou raciocínio abdutivo, de Charles S. Peirce como sinônima da inferência da melhor explicação (IBE – inference to the best explanation) de Gilbert Harman. Todavia, embora seja frequente essa identificação, alguns autores sugeriram que isso seja um equívoco causado pela má contextualização do conceito de abdução na filosofia peirciana. O presente artigo busca, portanto, oferecer uma análise exegética tanto do conceito de abdução, quanto de inferência da melhor explicação, visando esclarecer a questão. Argumento que a abdução de Peirce não deve ser tomada como sinônima da inferência da melhor explicação de Harman, posto que a abdução trata da geração criativa de hipóteses, enquanto IBE descreve o processo que seleciona a hipótese mais explicativa dentre um conjunto de alternativas já previamente formulado.
