The article presents Henri Matisse's plastic experiments and concerns, related to the useof fabrics in his painting to propose aesthetic innovations, either as a language or as atheme, at a time when artists were fighting for an autonomy in the field of art, against anacademic art system. To understand the transformations carried out by him in modern art,
when using textile patterns to work the tension between decorative means and non-dec-orative purposes, also, to structure a pure surface art, I sought support in the concept of
habitus from Pierre Bourdieu's sociology. Habitus in the sense of the actions of individualsdetermined by their past experiences, functioning as a matrix of perceptions. In the case of
Matisse, it refers to the visual education acquired in his childhood and youth in his home-town, enriched by his ethnographic research, when the fabrics of his existence became the
fabrics of his painting, one of his collaborations for the evolution of art of the 20th century.||O artigo apresenta as experimentações e inquietações plásticas de Henri Matisse ao utilizar
de tecidos, seja como linguagem, seja como tema, em sua pintura, no intuito de propor ino-vações estéticas quando os artistas lutavam por uma autonomia do campo da arte, contra
um sistema de arte acadêmico. Para compreender as transformações por ele realizadas na
arte moderna, ao utilizar padronagens têxteis para trabalhar a tensão entre meios decora-tivos e fins não decorativos, também, para estruturar uma arte de superfície pura, fui bus-car o suporte no conceito de habitus da sociologia de Pierre Bourdieu. Habitus no sentido
das ações dos indivíduos determinadas pelas suas experiências passadas, funcionandocomo matriz de percepções. No caso de Matisse, se refere a educação visual adquirida nasua infância e juventude na sua cidade natal, enriquecida por suas pesquisas etnográficas.
