This paper focuses on a specific characteristic of the modern photograph, the strangeness effect. It seeks to retrace the paths taken since it was incorporated in the photograph, becoming a remarkable aesthetic feature to Russian and German vanguards of the interwar, until it was fully established as part of a modern visual lexicon. At the same time, its progressive loss of political intention as it was incorporated in the visual culture during the second half of the 20th century is stressed.||Este artigo se detém em uma característica estética específica da fotografia moderna, o efeito de estranheza. Busca-se retraçar os caminhos que percorreu, desde que foi incorporada na fotografia, se tornando marcante nas vanguardas russa e alemã de entreguerras, até se estabelecer como parte do léxico imagético moderno. Ao mesmo tempo, atenta-se para a progressiva perda de intenção política que sofreu ao ser incorporada à cultura visual durante a primeira metade do século XX.
