Orientador: Haroldo Gallo||Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes||Resumo: Esta pesquisa de doutorado em artes visuais apresenta uma investigação que aborda conceitos e interpretações acerca do belo e do feio realçando a presença do estranho em obras artísticas, assim como, atribuindo a ele, em igual valor, o fascínio percebido por apreciadores e observadores de artes. A análise defende a hipótese de que o estranhamento, visto nos desdobramentos artísticos contemporâneos, é tão atrativo e sedutor quanto os atributos sobre a beleza ou a feiura. O tema proposto traz a obra de Cindy Sherman, enquanto referência artística de apoio e análise, legitimando os questionamentos e justificando a estranheza como atrativa linguagem expressiva. A investigação destaca um período de 20 anos, entre 1980 a 2000, pois esta fase marca um expressivo conjunto de obras e define Sherman enquanto artista madura, questionadora, sensível e provocativa. Sua obra está estruturada na linguagem fotográfica e, ao modelo de outros artistas que se inserem em seus trabalhos, ela utiliza a própria imagem como objeto de representação, motivo de estudo nesta tese. Alguns autores, historiadores e críticos de arte foram pesquisados, a fim de atestarem as explanações relativas à temática do estranhamento. Os textos auxiliam, quanto ao entendimento acerca da estética e linguagens visuais, enfatizando a contramão das vias de atração e do gosto comuns, porém, a investigação não pretende se aprofundar em questionamentos psicológicos ou filosóficos relativos a este tema. Todavia, pontuais momentos no texto esbarram-se em comentários filosóficos, que trazem conceitos sobre estética e o elemento estranho inserido neles, fundamentando as análises da seleção das obras citadas. O interesse na hipótese mencionada e no recorte da obra de Cindy Sherman, com temas referentes ao estranhamento, esquisitice, camuflagem, simulacro, ironia, sarcasmo e violência, tem relevância com atitudes e manifestações da arte contemporânea e seus desdobramentos nas inquietações dos artistas visuais, também, a motivação e sedução de observadores por obras que oferecem muito mais do que a mera contemplação plástica. Palavras-chaves: artes, estranhamento, beleza, feiura, fotografia, Cindy Sherman||Abstract: This doctoral research presents my investigation on the concepts and interpretations about the beautiful and the ugly, within the realm of the visual arts, highlighting the appearance of strangeness and attributing to it the perceived attraction in artistic expressions by art observers and appreciators. The analysis defends the hypothesis that the strangeness seen in contemporary artistic developments is as attractive and seductive as the attributes about beauty or ugliness. The proposed theme brings the work of Cindy Sherman, as a supportive artistic reference for analysis, which legitimises the questionings and justify the strangeness as an expressive and attractive language. The investigation highlighted a period of 20 years, from 1980 to 2000, because this phase marks an expressive set of works and defines Sherman as a mature, questioning, sensitive and provocative artist. Her work is structured in the language of photography and, like other artists who include themselves in their own work, she uses her own figure as an object of representation, the main reason of study in this thesis. To clarify this point of view, several authors, historians and art critics have been studied in order to attest the explanations regarding the thematic of strangeness. The texts assist in understanding the aesthetics and visual languages, emphasizing the opposite path of the course of attraction and the typical common taste, however the investigation does not intend to deepen into psychological or philosophical questions relative to this theme. Nevertheless, at a certain point philosophical comments are drawn, bringing concepts of aesthetics with strangeness element embedded, offering the basis of analysis of the cited selected artwork. The interest about such hypothesis and in the selected art work of Cindy Sherman, with themes related to the strangeness, oddity, camouflage, mockery, irony, sarcasm, and violence, is relevant to the attitudes and manifestations of the contemporary art and its natural unfolding towards the restlessness characteristics present in visual artists as well as the motivation and seduction of observers towards that, which offers much more than a mere plastic contemplation.
